SECTION 1 – GAME PLAY RULES
We play under the same rules as Hockey Canada. For the full rules, please click here, to download the Hockey Canada Referee’s Case Book/Rule Combination 2010-2012.
We do have a few Rules that are on top of these rules. They are designed for player safety.
1.10 Slap Shot Rule
We do not allow slap shots in SORHA for the simple fact that we like our teeth. Any shots taken with the stick raised above the top of the ankle will be blown dead by the referee and treated like an icing. If the same player proceeds to take 2 slap shots in one game a 3 minute unsportsmanlike penalty will be given to him.
1.2 Mouthing Refs
We have a tough time getting people to referee and they are bound to make a mistake. That does not give anybody the write to chirp them. The referee’s are encouraged to enforce the following rules…
- 1st Penalty – 3 minute penalty for unsportsmanlike
- 2nd Penalty – 3 minute penalty for unsportsmanlike and ejection from game.
- Repeat offenders throughout the year will be subject to review and possible fine (Max $50 fine)
1.3 Blood or Injuries
We are just here for fun, so any time during the game a player happens to draw blood or is injured, the referee should blow the whistle.
1.4 Goalies
The whistle will be blown if a Goalie is struck in the head with the puck or if he has lost him helmet.
Check back often for other game play rules to be updated.
SECTION 2 – Player Acquisitions and Movement
If you have any issues during a game please consult your captain or a league official directly. We would like to hear of any issues in order to improve the over all success of the league.
We do allow trades, as well players have to quit for reasons, or other stuff happens. So we do allow player movement on teams throughout the year. The following are rules to ensure that player movement is fair and if a team get punished for unfair player movement.
All players must be signed up and paid prior to entering the draft.
2.1 Waivers
The waiver system was brought in years ago in order to keep the league fair, while still adding skill players. When a player is no longer able to finish the season it is not an opportunity to replace him with a much more skilled player. Every player added who will be playing after the trade deadline must go through entry waivers.
***The goal of the waiver system is not to change the standings of the league.
The Waiver System works as follows:
- When Player A is deemed to be on the long term “IR” (out for the season), he will be replaced with a player from the sub list.
- Team A requests to place a new player (Player B) from the sub list on entry waivers. Player A and Player B will both be given a draft ranking by league officials.
- If no team below Team A in the standings wants to claim Player B off waivers, Player B is added to Team A’s squad.
- In the case that Player B is claimed by Team B (Last place is first on waiver wire and has first chance etc.) Team B will offer a minimum of 2 players who are of equal or greater value then Player A (based on draft ranking).
- Team A will then have a choice of which player to claim from Team B. This player (Player C) no takes place of Player A on Team A.
***In the order to keep the league fair, all roster moves will be voted on and approved by league officials. In emergency circumstances draft picks may be charged as compensation.
2.2 Subs Players
- Subs will be allowed to be used as needed, up until the Trade Deadline, which will be Superbowl Sunday every year.
- Sub players are required to pay $10 per game, paid to the team captain.
- After the trade deadline if your team happens to be under 10 players any given week, your then allowed to contact a sub, but only enough to make 10 skaters.
- If a team has a sub after the trade deadline and has over 10 skaters in it’s line up, that team will forfeit the game.
2.3 Trades
- All trades must be agreed by both captains in writing and submitted to the league officials
- The league then will review the trade to ensure that it will keep the league competitive.
- If the trade is deemed competitive for both teams, than the trade will be published on the website and all players involved will be called.
- If the trade is not deemed competitive than all captains will be contact to see if they have issue with the trade, if no captains have an issue with the trade than it will be treated as competitive. If any of the captains have an issues the trade will not go through.
2.3 Standings
- Regular season standings will be ordered by 1st – Points, 2nd – Head-to-Head Wins, 3rd – Goal Differential.
- Regular season standings will also determine playoff rank and draft rank for the next year.
These rules will be continuous like updates please check back on a regular basis.
